Why this won't happen.
UNC loves the ACC! UNC is the ACC. UNC is perching high in the ACC catbird seat. Will UNC give up that position and 63+ years of ACC history to break up the conference they help make? NO
Let's look at the ACC.
True Blue blood ACC programs for life: UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, NC State, and UVA. Those five will not let the ACC die without a fight. Just read HOO86's posts. He's not a big fan of the Big 10. I haven't met one UVA fan that would trade the ACC for the Big 10. I'm sure there might be a few, but I haven't encountered any to date.
ACC programs that have no where to go if ACC breaks up and loses P-5(4) status: Pitt, Syracuse, Wake, BC, and Louisville. 4 of those 5 schools are new members of the ACC. I have a very good feeling that all 4 stick with the ACC blue bloods. That makes the ACC 9 strong.
Attractive ACC programs that the "experts" say could easily leave the ACC because they aren't happy or have other options: FSU, Miami, Clemson, GA Tech, and VA Tech. First of all, FSU and Clemson aren't going to the SEC because Florida and USC-E don't want them. Clemson also likes the ACC's academic reputation over the SEC's. The ACC is also an easier path to a football national championship than the SEC. GA Tech has been mentioned as a possible Big 10 addition but they would be on an island if they joined. UNC and UVA won't join the Big 10 because of their commitment to the ACC. The word at Virginia Tech is that the administration and so called "big wig" donors are happy with ACC membership.
Even without an ACCN, the ACC is still united, more so than the Big 12. FSU makes the most noise, but even they recently won a BCS Football Championship and are doing well in Olympic sports.
John Swofford needs to deliver an ACCN very soon or things could become unsettled. An ACCN would end all these "ACC schools to the Big 10 and Big 12" rumors. An ACCN would make FSU and Clemson very happy along with the other 13 members. All I can say is enough of the "Work in progress" talk and give us a network.
